Along with Trang An, Hang Mua (Mua Cave) and Van Long, Tam Coc is a famous attraction in Ninh Binh province, in the north of Vietnam. It is about 100 km from Hanoi to Tam Coc, and would take around 2.5 hours travelling. We can go by bus, van, train, motorcycle or even by bike.
From Hanoi to Tam Coc by Bus or Van
The most common and convenient way is to catch a bus or a limousine van to get to Tam Coc. Some of those buses also stop in Trang An area also, so you can get to Trang An on some of them.
The bus price start from 80k ($3.5) on some very basic one, they might offer no pickup at hotel, to about 150k or 200k ($8.5) with premium buses. The limousine van price is from 200k to 300k. Those price I got from Tweely Travel Agency, the price might change overtime, send them a message for details.
If you love to arrange everything yourself, check out two below links to buy a bus or train ticket. The website is verified, however you should read carefully the refund and cancellation policy.
Those buses and vans departure all days, from 7 am until 5 pm. The morning buses (7-8 am) are unusually cheaper than the afternoon buses (13-14h). Some vans companies like Ninh Binh Excursion offer same price all the day with multiple departure. You should book those van through an agency to get a better price.
One of the must-try experience in Vietnam is to travel by train. Hanoi to Ninh Binh train is one of the shortest routes that I really recommend. Yes there are train from the south to the north, from Hanoi to Sapa, from Hue to Da Nang as well, but if you miss all that? Hanoi to Ninh Binh is recommended by two reasons. First, it is short. If you don’t have much love with train, it is only two hours. Secondly, because it is short, you can try the seat instead of the berth, you’ll see much more things, like how the locals commune, how is it at every station, and the landspace out of the widows as well.
There is many trains from Hanoi to Ninh Binh everyday. They departure at 6:00, 8:50, 14:25, 14:35, 19:25 and 20:10. The price varies from 80k to 250k depending on the type of seat and cabin you pick. For example the hard seat, no AC cost only 80k while a berth with AC cost 250k. Please be remind those price is applied only when you buy ticket at the station. If you buy through agency they will charge additional cost. But wait until the days to buy those tickets is too risky if it is fully booked, my advice is to check with the agency first, if they offer reasonable price, why don’t book with them?

It would take the train about 2 hours and 15 minutes to Ninh Binh city. Yes, it is not Tam Coc. Ninh Binh city is 6 km from Tam Coc, so you need to catch a taxi to Tam Coc (for about 80k) or to Trang An (9 km, 110k). Or you can rent a motorbike near the station, ride to Tam Coc and discover the surroundings.
