We all saw some of those “legendary” photos on the internet or in some travel agency websites and wonder: how can we see this thing in Tam Coc, the golden rice fields? We could find some answers on TripAdvisor but we are still not too sure. Check below for a better answer.
Time of the Yellow Rice Field or Golden Rice Field in Tam Coc
I looked up the internet for this and found some answers said late April, early May or late May, early June are the time that you can meet the golden rice field in Tam Coc. The correct one is not so easy. In 2020, it is late May, early June, but how about other years?
We need to deeply understand how they grow the rice so that we can predict the ripen time exactly. People in the north of Vietnam have grown rice for thousands of years. We decide our crop time based on a calendar called lunar calendar, different from the regular calendar. This lunar calendar determines months, seasons in a year depending on the movement of the Moon and the Sun. Because of this dependence, the calendar is more accurate to predict weather, tide level than the regular calendar. Sometimes there is a leap year, in this leap year, we have a whole leap month instead of a leap day. For example, in 2020, we have two continuous Aprils of 60 days. And in those years, farmers grow their crops later than normal, to avoid the coldness of the winter.
That is the reason why in some years the golden rice time is different from others. The most reliable way is to contact to a local to ask about the crop. Yes you can contact me because I have friends in Tam Coc. However, I can only be quite sure after farmers grow their crops. From that I can predict the ripen time. Thing might change due to the weather every year.
How about other time in a year?
Yes, the stunning photo of the yellow rice field is very attractive. But it last only for about 1 to 2 weeks every year. So if you cannot arrange at that time, check out other time also.
Before being harvested, the rice field is green for months. It is very beautiful also. The field is green from early March until it is ripen in late May. After that it is green again from September before harvested in December or January.
There are sometimes in a year when farmers leave the field blank with brown mud or green grass. No worries, you will have a chance to see some buffaloes or some goats on the field while the mountain landscape is the same.
Between two crops, the farmer do the mud, with buffalo or machine, it is interesting watching them working, as well.
All in all, Tam Coc takes you only about 1 day to visit, so just come, any season, anytime. If you are intended for some extract time like the golden rice time, feel free to contact me. I’m more than happy to help.
